Our recycled tin Crocodile comes to us from the war-torn country of Zimbabwe. Five brothers create this and other fanciful tin animals for us. Measures approx. 9" long and 3" tall. Each is unique, so colors and designs will vary.

Taking sheets of tin and using only hammers, pliers and metal snips, the five Mukhuna brothers (shown inset)fashion wonderful renditions of Africa's most popular wildlife and a collection of insects and other critters. The finished tin animals are handpainted in beautifully contrasting colors and designs, a style known as Weya. We first met the brothers back in 1993 at the Mbare Musika, Harare's largest craft market in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe, once the garden country of Africa, has come into recent peril becuase of Robert Mugabe, the self-imposed president since 1987. His chaotic land redistribution campaign caused an exodus of farmers, ushering in runaway inflation and shortages of food and basic needs for many. In recent months his demolition of shanty towns and arrests of secondary sellers of such items as sugar and flour has caused international attention to be placed on this once advanced country. Thank you for helping to support indigenous craftspeople who make a living from the products you see here!
