Day of the Dead de los MuertosMexico's Dia de los Muertos - the Days of the Dead is an annual holiday in Mexico celebrated between October 31 and November 2nd. It is a time to honor and celebrate those who've passed on. Families clean and decorate graves, build altars to lost loved ones and decorate with fun and fanciful skeletons. Based on ancient Aztec mingled with Christian beliefs, this celebration of the memory of deceased ancestors is celebrated beginning at dusk on October 31st through November 1 (All Saints Day) and November 2 (All Souls' Day). While the dates overlap, it is not connected with Halloween, although it shares some historical origins. This holiday is quickly gaining popularity in America and could be considered "the new American Holiday". Zanzibar offers one of northern California's largest selections of Day of the Dead items, including: skeleton figures, skulls, sugar skull molds, papel picado, plates, platters, books and even candies! Visit our gallery for our best selection as only a TINY selection is online (most items are one-of-a-kind and thus impossible to put them all online). If you are looking for something contact us! We stock Day of the Dead items year round, however our largest selection is always available September - October. You can visit our information website at: www.ZanzibarTribalArt.com to learn more about this fast growing holiday including how to build an altar, traditional recipes and the significance of many of the items. We also have photos of hundreds of items (many of which are one of a kind and thus we can't list here - but you can always call us about prices and availability of items you see on our sister website!)
