Two sizes to choose from (8" and 10"). $20 & Up Himalayan mineral salt is referred to as pink halite and is used for protection from evil especially around the home. Salt is also used for purification, cleansing, dispelling negative energy and releasing emotional attachments.
It is highly recommended for those who work in environments of negativity. It has gentle but strong grounding and centering energies and is said to bring abundance and prosperity into a home.
The lamps are said to be natural Ionic
Generators. Negative Ions are emitted when humidity and moisture evaporate
through a salt medium such as your beautiful salt lamp. Ions are
said to promote a relaxed state in your being and have profound health
benefits, actually assisting your body and mind to enter a relaxed state.

__________________________________________ MOLINILLOS: A Delicious Tradition... Mexican Chocolate Whisks
Made of turned wood and used to froth warm drinks such
as hot chocolate, champurrado and atole, these tools were actually
invented by the Spanish colonists in Mexico in the early 1700's. The
molinillo is rotated between the users two hands placed palm-sides
together to spin it, mixing the beverage. Prior to its invention, frothing
was achieved by pouring it from one cup to another repeatedly.

__________________________________________ NEW ROBERT BURKETTE SHIBUICHI PENDANTS! Robert is a close personal friend and a world-famous jewelry designer! He's been quite ill for the last few years (multiple heart attacks and strokes as well as a host of other issues). He's FINALLY feeling a bit better and was able to get into his studio and create some truly dramatic pieces - a few limited edition - but most of these are ONE-OF-A-KIND.
Bob is highly collectable and works primarily in a metalworking technique called "Shibuichi", from Japan. This techniques combines silver and copper to produce truly amazing detail and a fantastic patinas. It is EXTREMELY difficult to execute and Bob is one of less than half a dozen people in the USA who does it (and he taught all the others!) His skill is amazing in addition to be a genuinely nice guy!

The mineral pyrite, or iron pyrite, also known as

DINOSAUR EGGSHELLS! $6-15
Giant vegetarian sauropods called
titanasaurs (think bracheasaurus and or brontosaurus) lived in what is
today South America. Saltasaurus was one such titanosaur sauropod,
and lived around 70 million years ago. When it was first discovered, in
1980, it forced palaeontologists to reconsider some assumptions about
sauropods as Saltasaurus possessed crocodile-like armour. Previously, it
had been assumed that size alone was sufficient defence for the massive
sauropods. Since then, palaeontologists have investigated the possibility
that other sauropods may also have had armour; for example, the
Argentinian Laplatasaurus. As titanosaurs go, the South American Saltasaurus was the runt of the litter--this dinosaur only weighed about 10 tons, compared to 50 or 100 tons for more famous sauropod cousins like Diplodocus or Argentinosaurus. (The titanosaurs were offshoots of the classic sauropods of the late Jurassic period, and are technically included under the sauropod umbrella.) This weight difference can be explained by Saltosaurus' relatively streamlined build compared to its huge, squat cousins.
However, what really set Saltasaurus apart
from the pack was the bony armor lining its back--an adaptation that
caused paleontologists to initially mistake this dinosaur's remains for
those of Ankylosaurus. Clearly, this slim herbivore attracted the notice
of the numerous tyrannosaurs and raptors of the late Cretaceous period,
and its back plates evolved as a much-needed form of defense. ___________________________________________ Amethyst Specimens from Brazil & Uruguay We just received a full pallet (literally half a ton - over 1,000 pounds!) of amethyst specimens from Brazil and Uruguay - starting at $1 and up!

We're not your typical import store - we do carry handicraft but we also carry many world-class museum quality pieces of artwork from famous, published artisans, as well. Zanzibar values the long term relationships that we have developed with our artisan friends in over 100 countries throughout the years. We have always preferred to work directly with the artisans rather than go through traditional middle men and catalogs. We are exceptionally conscious of the exploitation that can occur with differing exchange values, but would like to stress that we believe in Fair Trade and a fair price paid for items. As as a result of these values, we always pay our artists a good price for their work - thus enabling our artisans and their families to have a good standard of living. Our basic philosophy: We don't usually have sales. On rare occasions we have sidewalk sales to give blow out prices on sample items, old inventory, one ofs, etc. These are not yearly and we will always notify our clients in advance. We price our items fairly and don't artificially inflate the price just so we can put it on sale occasionally. If we get a particularly good price or buy on something - we pass that savings onto our clients by pricing it fairly. We like to say we would have no problem charging our mother's the same price for something we sell to our clients (yes! we like our moms!) In this day and age many people buy something just because it is on sale - not recognizing the true value or a fair price. We feel our prices are extremely competitive and fair. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So come in, browse and ask us what something is - where it comes from - or who made it! You'll be surprised at just how much stuff we fit (neatly) into our little store! Zanzibar is dedicated to only carrying sustainably produced and fairly traded items. To learn more, visit our pages on what is fair trade? Located in the heart of midtown Sacramento, at the corner of 18th and L Streets, Zanzibar's retail gallery offers over 9,000 fairly traded items from over 100 countries!...only a fraction of which is online. _________________________________________ We particularly pride ourselves in our dedication to authenticity, fair trade, and the very highest quality merchandise possible. From Africa to India, Papua New Guinea to Peru, Mexico to Thailand, our gallery offers a virtual market bazaar. All of our pieces are hand-picked, with as many purchased directly from the artisans as possible. No forced child labor*, no factory produced pieces - ever! *(click here for more info on child labor). PLEASE NOTE: This is primarily an INFORMATIONAL WEBSITE. This is NOT a comprehensive catalog of what we carry - some of these items will be available, others not. If you see something you like you can call us and we'll let you know if it is available or if other similar items are available. We can, as time allows, email you pictures. As we are a retail store all items are subject to prior sale. If you call, please avoid calling during weekends and lunch times (our busy times). _________________________________________ New Shipments from Oaxaca, Mexico

_________________________________________ Baltic Amber Jewelry!
Earrings, Pendants, Necklaces, Bracelets & More! Sacramento's largest selection of Amber Jewelry _________________________________________ We proudly sell Heirloom Quality Jewelry Sadly, in today's cheaper rules economy, the art of making LASTING, QUALITY jewelry has nearly been lost.
Every mall store sells cheap Chinese sweatshop produced jewelry that often breaks or wears out after just a few wearings - and the garbage they sell on tv - well, lets not discuss their used car salesman tactics and cheap, mass molded and cheaply produced pieces of inferior quality. The old adage - "you get what you pay for" is never truer than with jewelry. Zanzibar prides itself on selling high quality NATURAL stones (not synthetic, lab grown, hydroformed or adulterated (most stones are heat treated, color enhanced (dyed), irradiated, surface treated among many other treatments) set into hand made, thick sterling silver (and some 14k and 18k gold) - jewelry that comes with a 100% lifetime guarantee and that will last generations. _________________________________________ Buddha Hands from Thailand in various Mudra Positions for your altar and meditation

These small jars are decorated with real 18k gold and are completely hand painted/glazed . Benjarong is a traditional form of Thai porcelain. These small jars were originally used by the Royal court as both food, spice and offering vessels. The style of multi-colored enamels on a white porcelain base came from Ming dynasty in China. The name Benjarong was derived from Bali and Sanskrit words Benja and Rong, meaning literally Five Colors. Five Colors really means many colors because the hand-painted pieces are usually decorated in three, five, eight colors, or even more. Designs using gold are called Lai Nam Thong in Thai. This style was developed under the reign of King Rama V (1809-1884)

_________________________________________ Reclaimed Teak Elephant Carvings from Thailand Happy elephant family carved of reclaimed teak wood root in Chiang Mai northern Thailand. Each year Zanzibar plants 250 8-12 foot tall teak seedlings in the rainforests of northern Thailand. Replacing trees that were cut down over the last 150 years. This program was started by the king of Thailand to cut down on illegal logging. For every 125 seedlings we plant in the dry season (if we plant in the rainy season they grow tall without establishing roots but if planted in the dry season they send out deep roots which assures a secure footing) we are allowed to purchase (per sq cm) old stumps from trees cut down prior to 1900. Some of these stumps are huge - 8,10,15 feet tall with as much wood below ground as above. When these old growth trees were cut down they didn't have chain saws but used axes or two man ribbon saws - and they couldn't cut through the base with all the burls - so they went up the trunk to clear wood. These are stumps which can take over. 1000 years to decompose or more wouldn't have made good lumber but are perfect for carving. All pieces are unique and one of a kind. Part of the purchase prices goes to suppose elephant sanctuaries in Thailand _________________________________________ Japanese Wooden Dolls (Kokeshi) _________________________________________ Milagro covered crosses and hearts from Mexico

__________________________________________ MOLINILLOS - Mexican Chocolate Whisk/Stirrer The molinillo [moh-lee-NEE-yoh] is the Mexican chocolate "whisk" or "stirrer". It is made of "turned" wood and it is used to froth warm drinks such as hot chocolate, Atole, and Champurrado. These tools were actually invented by the Spaniard colonists in Mexico in the early 1700's. Prior to the invention of the molinillo, chocolate was froth by pouring it from one cup to another. The first molinillos were made to fit into a container with the handle extending out of the top. The molinillo was then rotated between the users two hands placed palm-sides together. The twisting motion frothed the chocolate.
__________________________________________ Turkish Pottery Bowls & Dishes
These beautiful dishes, bowls and platters are high fired and are exuberantly decorated with hyacinths, tulips, carnations, roses, evil eyes (talismans for protection and good luck), stylized floral scrollwork known as hatayi, Chinese clouds, imbrication, cintemani (a design consisting of three spots and pairs of flickering stripes), and geometric patterns.
They are lead free and dishwasher and oven safe, however, we would highly recommend hand washing. Beautiful and functional, each piece is a unique, one-of-a-kind work of art! __________________________________________ Nicaraguan Pottery

These beautiful one-of-a-kind pill boxes
feature a small sherd of broken Chinese Ming or Ching Dynasty pottery
surrounded by embossed white metal. These pieces are guaranteed to be
antique porcelain, having been made from 300 - 660+ years ago during
either the Ming or Ching Dynasties circa - 1644 A.C.E (After Common Era). __________________________________________ Cloisonn Dishes, bowls, vases and banglesCloisonn, an ancient metalworking technique, is a multi-step process. It was developed in the Near East and spread to the Byzantine Empire and from there along the Silk Road to China. Small ribbons of copper are meticulously soldered to form flowers and other shapes on a copper background. These sections are then filled with a paste of powdered colored glass that is then fired, producing the amazing variety of colors, shapes and patterns on these wonderful jewelry pieces, bowls, dishes and vases. Each one is a true work of art taking many hours to complete. 100% handcrafted. Fairly Traded. Master artisan quality. __________________________________________ Chulucanas Pottery from Peru This unique hand made (not molded) pottery and figures is pit fired - using simple glazes; but the true beauty comes from the rich, coffee/chocolate brown patina which is achieved by firing the piece with green mango leaves which leaves a deep, dark brown/black patina on the unglazed portions. Truly unique.. and affordable! ___________________________________________

Good question. Zanzibar is actually an island off the east coast of Africa and the country of Tanzania which it is officially a part of. Today Zanzibar (and its northern island neighbor, Pemba) are known for tourism and beaches as well as its old stone town. For thousands of years Zanzibar has been a trading center for spices, wood, dried fish, salt - just about everything you can imagine. Arabs, Persians, West Indians, Chinese and even Europeans (Portuguese especially) have traded here for hundreds of years. While the spices, especially cloves, were locally grown, most of the other items traded for were from other places. The coastal Swahili language, in part a trading language, evolved here. Thus Zanzibar was more of a trading Mecca - where one could find things from many different lands - thus we named our gallery Zanzibar since we currently have items from over 100 different countries (and while we have stuff from Tanzania, we don't actually have anything from Zanzibar!) _______________________________________ semi-precious stone jewelry, nativities and crches, day of the dead figures, dia de los muertos skulls and altars, Jimenez retablos, Mexican Catrina skeletons, African masks, recycled silk yarns, custom Egyptian cartouches, African Ghana Bolga Baskets, , South African Zulu Baskets, Tingsha, Mudcloth and other African textiles, pampering personal care products, stock mask stands, and wood print blocks, Talavera Pottery from Mexico. *a note on child labor: we would NEVER allow child labor in the traditional sense (children leaving school to work in factories or under duress), however, frankly, we work with many family run workshops and occasionally part of a child's responsibilities is to help - no different from your child taking out the garbage or doing chores. On rare instances, we actually carry works of art created by children of famous artisans - they are simply learning from their parents and take great joy in selling their first produced pieces. We're proud that we've bought many of upcoming teenage artisan's very first items that they've produced - on the way to becoming master artisans like their parent(s). Day of the Dead Plates! We also have platters, bowls, ginger jars, vases, pitchers, tiles, boxes and many other skully themed ceramics!
